National Awareness Campaign Encourages Nebraska Drivers to “Stop on Red”

NE Speeding Driver CollisionA new driver safety campaign aims to prevent dangerous intersection accidents and remind drivers of the deadly risk of running a red light. According to the Nebraska Radio Network, the “National Stop on Red Week” was celebrated this month with the goal of educating, encouraging, and empowering motorists across the nation to “make better decisions when stopping on red.” A federal study of NE traffic accidents showed that intersection-related crashes claimed 64 lives in 2009, and in the U.S., 8,700 people were killed in intersection collisions.

Also, a federal study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that red-light running is the leading cause of urban accidents, and more than 2.3 million drivers received a red light citation last year. Read the rest »
