Number of Pedestrian Fatalities in U.S. Rises

Omaha Fatal Pedestrian AccidentAccording to new statistics from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the annual number of pedestrian deaths in the nation has increased for the first time in five years. AOL.com reports that 4,280 pedestrians lost their lives in 2010, which is a four percent increase from the 4,109 pedestrians killed in 2009. In addition, an estimated 70,000 were injured. Overall, pedestrians accounted for 13 percent of the 32,885 traffic-related fatalities in 2010, which is a one percent increase from the prior year.
The report also indicated that a pedestrian is killed every two hours in the U.S., on average. These latest statistics from the NHTSA do not include pedestrians or bicyclists that occurred on private property. Read the rest »
